Who Are The Santri?


There are so many who define santri as people who study Islam, people who worship seriously or pious people. 

The word "santri" comes from the Arabic letters pegon sin, nun, ta', and ya' which have the following meanings:
  • Sin means Salik ilal-Akhirah (traveling the spiritual path to the hereafter).
  • Nun means Na-ib 'anil Masyayikh (successor of the teachers).
  • Ta' means Tarik 'anil Ma'ashi (abandoning immorality).
  • Ra' means Raghib ilal khayr (always hoping for good).
  • Ya' means Yarjus Salamah (optimistic about safety).
Santri is often used for people who are studying or explore Islam in Islamic boarding schools. Santri experienced an expansion of meaning, KH. Mustofa Bisri defines that the santri are not the only ones who stay, but whoever has the morals like the santri, they are santri.

This meaning provides fresh breath for those who have never stayed in a boarding school, but have good morals like santri. The Vice President of Indonesia, KH. Ma'ruf Amin, that santri are not only meant for people living in Islamic boarding schools and reciting classic books, but for people who imitate the Kiai (Professor).

Chairman of the Nahdlatul Ulama executive board KH. Said Aqil Siradj, defines santri are people who accept Islamic teachings from the kiai (Professor), and the kiai learn Islam from their teachers who are connected to the prophet Muhammad. Santri accept Islam and spread it with a cultural approach that has good morals, gets along well with others.

Minister of Religion of the Republic of Indonesia 2014-2019 Lukman Hakim Syaifuddin stated that santri are individuals who study Islam and spread peace to anyone, anytime, and anywhere.
